Britannia was founded in 1892 by a group of British businessmen with an investment of only 295 rupees. Initially, cookies were produced in a small house in the centre of Calcutta. Later, the company was taken over by the Gupta brothers, mainly Nalin Chandra Gupta, a lawyer, and operated under the name “V.S. Brothers” Later in 1918, C.H. Holmes, an English businessman based in Kolkata, was taken on as a partner and Britannia Biscuit Company Limited (BBCo) was finally formed. The Mumbai factory was built in 1924, and Peek Freans UK acquired a majority stake in BBCo.

In the same year, products such as Tiger Biscuits, Checkers and Jim Jams were introduced, which are still popular today. Seeing the success of their products, the company decided to expand its product line to offer something for everyone. Today, Britannia produces some of the most popular cookies in the country, including Bourbon, Good day, Milk Bikis, etc. Their affordability, taste and quality, have enabled them to remain popular even after so long time.

Currently, Britannia’s market share is around 38%, making it one of the largest brands in the market. The company continues to grow at a great pace, providing employment to a large number of people across the country.
