Binny Bansal is a software engineer and an Indian Internet entrepreneur from India. He is from the capital of Punjab and Haryana State, Chandigarh and was brought up there as well. After studying at St. Anne’s in Chandigarh, he went to the Indian Institute of Technology at Delhi (IIT-Delhi).
In 2007 he co-founded the famous online e-commerce site, ‘Flipkart’ with his friend, Sachin Bansal. He was twice rejected by Google prior to co-founding Flipkart. Binny worked also for an online company, Amazon as a software engineer for nine months. Previously, Bansal had worked for the Sarnoff Corporation, developing automotive lane sensors.
Binny Bansal and his business partner Sachin Bansal realized that the E-commerce market in India was very small. In 2007 they left Amazon and planned to launch an online bookstore, later they founded Flipkart in a two-storeyed building in Koramangala as an e-commerce company.
Many people think that Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal are both brothers. They both worked at Amazon, an American multinational technology company, before founding Flipkart. Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal distributed books on scooters in the early days of their business. Because of his efforts and hard work, Flipkart gradually grew and expanded into several categories, such as electrical equipment, electronics, fashion, sports, home appliances, books, etc.
His role as the Chief Operating Officer from 2007 to 2016 earned him the title ‘The Operational Guy’, as well as ‘The Executioner’. In 2016, he became CEO and in 2017, he became Group CEO. Employees at Flipkart described Binny as calm, approachable, and friendly person. Even though he ran a multimillion-dollar firm successfully, he was always open to learning. Flipkart emerged as the first e-commerce company in India. Walmart acquired a 77% stake in the Flipkart group In 2018. After the acquisition, Binny Bansal continued as Group CEO. He was named as the 86th richest person in India by Forbes India Rish List, with a total net worth of more than $1.3 billion. But due to some internal issue Binny Bansal stepped down from his position as CEO of the company in November, 2018.
